Osteoarthritis

As we get older the joints in our body can change. Osteoarthritis(OA) is a common condition that affects the surface of the joints. This can happen due to past injury to a joint, having had surgery on a joint or just due to a combination of time and use. Often clients seek treatment at Julie Kerdachi Physiotherapy reporting pain, stiffness, grinding or catching in their large joints like their hips, knees and shoulders. OA is an active process and can often improve with the appropriate intervention.

Physiotherapy can be a very effective option for reducing pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis. We assess each individual joint and formulate treatment plans to best reduce your symptoms.

Hands-on physiotherapy treatments like mobilisation techniques of stiff joints can help get them moving better and decrease pain. Really good management of osteoarthritis revolves around an exercise program that promotes joint movement and strengthening of the muscles surrounding the affected joints. We will guide you down the right path in terms of what exercise to do. There is often fear that exercise will make the damage worse so through education and addressing these fears and anxieties we can get you doing a safe exercise program. This may include giving home exercises or integrating you into group exercise classes such as Pilates or Hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy, which is exercise in water can be very effective as it allows you to exercise with decreased loading through your joints so that you can move with more freedom and less pain.
